ATOM Myanmar, formerly known as Telenor Myanmar, is a telecommunications company based in Yangon, Myanmar. The company was founded in 2022 following the divestment of Telenor Myanmar operations to a joint venture owned by the Lebanese M1 Group and Shwe Byain Phyu. This transition occurred in the aftermath of the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, during which Telenor faced significant pressure from the State Administration Council to activate intercept equipment for surveillance purposes. Consequently, Telenor wrote off its US$780 million investment in Myanmar. On 8 June 2022, the company officially rebranded as ATOM. The CEO of ATOM as of September 2022 was Muhammad Ziaullah Siddiqui. ATOM aimed to enhance Myanmar's telecommunications landscape by investing in advanced digital products and services, with a commitment to improving living standards and fostering digital transformation.

    4G Network

The transition to 4G technology began with Telenor Myanmar's commercial launch of LTE services on 7 July 2016. The 4G network operated using the 2.1 GHz spectrum, initially covering the capital city, Nay Pyi Taw, with plans to expand coverage. The introduction of 4G services provided faster internet speeds and improved network reliability for customers. By 2017, Telenor Myanmar had expanded its 4G network to cover major cities, including Yangon and Mandalay. The company utilised various frequency bands, including band 1 and band 8, to optimise network performance and coverage. The deployment of VoLTE (Voice over LTE) services was also planned to enhance voice call quality.

      5G Network

ATOM Myanmar embarked on its journey towards 5G technology with successful trials conducted in Yangon and Mandalay on 8 June 2024. These trials, conducted in collaboration with Huawei in Yangon and ZTE in Mandalay, achieved impressive data transfer rates exceeding 1 gigabit per second (1 Gbps). This marked a significant step towards the commercial launch of 5G services in Myanmar. ATOM announced plans to invest over US$330 million over three years to upgrade its network infrastructure and become the first to launch 5G services in the country. The company aimed to leverage 5G technology to deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming, and support advanced applications across various industries. ATOM's commitment to 5G technology was part of its broader strategy to supercharge Myanmar's digital transformation and enhance connectivity for its citizens.
