AT&T Mexico, also known as AT&T Mexico Wireless and AT&T Mexico Mobility, is a mobile telephone operator based in Mexico City. The company, which was formerly known as Iusacell and Nextel Mexico, operates under the parent company AT&T and serves approximately 13% of the Mexican wireless market. The company's roots can be traced back to 1987 when it was founded as Iusacell by the Peralta family. In 2001, Bell Atlantic, now Verizon Communications, and Vodafone Group acquired 74.5% of the company. However, due to Iusacell's debt default, the stake was sold to Ricardo Salinas Pliego's Movil@ccess in 2003.
The company underwent significant changes in the subsequent years. In 2007, a merger took place between Iusacell and Unefon Holdings, a wireless telephony operator. This merger resulted in a company with over 3.4 million subscribers, equivalent to approximately 7% of the wireless telecommunications market in Mexico. The most pivotal change occurred in 2014 when the US company AT&T announced the acquisition of Iusacell for $2.5 billion, including debt. This was followed by the purchase of Nextel Mexico in 2015, and the renaming of Iusacell and Nextel stores to AT&T, a process completed by the end of 2016.
