Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau S.A.R.L. (CTM) was founded in October 1981 and is headquartered in Macau. CTM operates as a telecommunications company providing a comprehensive range of services in Macau. The company was established following an agreement between the Portuguese Macau government and British telecommunications company Cable & Wireless plc. Initially, telecommunications in Macau were managed by Macau Post and Telecommunications, but CTM took over to improve service delivery. CTM holds a monopoly franchise license from the government for all telecommunications services except mobile telephone services. Over the years, CTM has evolved, with CITIC Telecom International as its major shareholder, and has been a key player in advancing Macau's telecommunications infrastructure.

CTM was granted a 4G licence alongside other operators like 3Macau, China Telecom (Macau) Limited, and SmarTone (Macau). The company officially launched its 4G+ mobile network on October 20, 2015, supporting both B3 Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and B40 Time Division Duplex (TDD) modes. This launch aimed to provide a more innovative and diversified 4G service experience for Macau residents. The 4G+ service was complemented by a city-wide fiber-optic network, WiFi hotspots, data centers, and cloud technology, laying the foundation for "Digital Macau." CTM's 4G network construction was completed by the end of 2015, and the company continued to refine its services to ensure high-quality connectivity.

The company ceased providing TDD B40 services in November 2020.

      5G Network

CTM began its journey into 5G technology by launching its 5G service in November 2022. The service received a positive response, with over 86% of users upgrading to the new network. On July 22, 2024, CTM took a significant step by launching the first 5.5G service in Macau, marking the region's entry into the 5.5G era. This enhanced version of 5G technology, also known as 5G-A (5G-Advanced), offered download and upload speeds ten times faster than traditional 5G. The 5.5G network also improved network speed and throughput capacity, enabling millisecond-level ultra-low latency and supporting 100 billion IoT application connections. CTM focused on RedCap IoT applications and introduced various 5.5G service plans to meet diverse customer needs. The company's efforts in 5.5G development were part of its strategy to transform Macau into a "10Giga" smart city, fostering digital transformation and industrial digitalisation solutions.
