Dhiraagu, established in 1988, is the first telecommunications company in the Maldives. It was initially formed as a joint venture between the Maldivian government and Cable & Wireless, with the government holding 55% and Cable & Wireless holding 45% of the ownership. Dhiraagu had a monopoly on the industry in the Maldives until 2005, and retained exclusive rights to terminate incoming international traffic on any network until the end of 2008. The company later became public, and its current ownership is split between the Maldivian government with a 41.8% share, Batelco with a 52% share, and the general public owning the remaining 6.2%. The name "Dhiraagu" is an acronym for Dhivehi Raajjeygé Gulhun, which translates to 'Connection of Maldives'.
