Digicel Samoa

Digicel Samoa launched its 3G network in March 2012. The introduction of 3G technology marked a significant milestone for the company, enabling enhanced mobile data services and improved connectivity for its customers. The 3G network operated on the 2100 MHz frequency band, providing coverage across key areas in Samoa. As of 2020, there were no reports indicating the shutdown of the 3G network, suggesting that it continued to operate alongside newer technologies.

Digicel Samoa commenced its 4G LTE services in May 2016, utilising the 1800 MHz (B3) frequency band. The launch of the 4G network represented a major upgrade in mobile internet speeds and network reliability. By 2018, Digicel Samoa had completed a significant network upgrade, covering 90% of the population with its 4G/LTE network. The company continued to enhance its network infrastructure, achieving 100% LTE coverage by August 2020. This made Digicel Samoa the first operator in Samoa to reach full LTE coverage, a milestone that was part of a WST2.5 million (USD1 million) network upgrade cycle.

As of March 2024, Digicel Samoa had been granted conditional approval by the Government of Samoa to launch 5G technology. The company partnered with Nokia to upgrade its cell tower sites, starting with the Apia Central Business District (CBD), to introduce 5G capabilities while maintaining its existing 4G network. The initial rollout included five 5G sites going live in the Apia CBD by July 2024, offering customers the opportunity to connect to 5G services. This rollout was part of Digicel Samoa's strategy to usher in a new era of connectivity, focusing on delivering faster speeds and enhanced user experiences. The company emphasized that its upgraded infrastructure would adhere to cybersecurity standards to ensure the security and resilience of Samoa's critical national infrastructure.
