Digicel Vanuatu is a subsidiary of Digicel, a telecommunications company founded in 2001 by Irish businessman Denis O'Brien. Digicel began its operations in Jamaica and has since expanded its services to various countries across the Caribbean, Central America, and the Pacific. Digicel Vanuatu offers mobile phone network and home entertainment services in Vanuatu, a Pacific island country. The parent company, Digicel, has undergone various acquisitions and expansions over the years, including the purchase of Cingular Wireless’ Caribbean and Bermudan operations in 2005 and the launch of its services in Trinidad and Tobago in 2006.
In 2010, Digicel introduced mobile banking services in Fiji and, in 2011, took a controlling stake in Netxar Technologies, a leading systems integrator in the Caribbean region. Despite numerous court rulings and financial challenges, Digicel has continued to expand and diversify its services, with its most recent venture being the sale of its Pacific operations to the Australian telecommunications company, Telstra Group, in 2021. The ownership of Digicel, including its Vanuatu subsidiary, remains under the control of its founder, Denis O'Brien.
