Emtel Ltd. is a telecommunications company based in Ebene City, Mauritius. The company was launched on 29 May 1989, making it the first mobile telephony operator in the Southern Hemisphere. The establishment of Emtel took place under the aegis of The Currimjee Jeewanjee Group, a prominent business entity in Mauritius. In terms of ownership, Bharti Enterprises, an Indian conglomerate, acquired a 25% stake in Emtel on 27 April 2015. This acquisition was conducted through its subsidiary, Indian Continent Investment Limited (ICIL). Today the company is a joint venture between Currimjee Jeewanjee & Co. Ltd. and Millicom International Cellular SA.
3G Network
The company launched 3G UMTS services over B1 (2100 MHz) in November 2004 - the first 3G network in Africa.
