The Eritrean Telecommunication Services Corporation, commonly known as Eritel, was established in 1996 as a state-owned enterprise. Initially known as the Telecommunications Service of Eritrea, Eritel is the sole operator of both landline and mobile telephone communication infrastructure in Eritrea. The company is headquartered in Asmara, Eritrea, and provides local wireline telecommunication services, digital TV, mobile phone operations, and internet services. Eritel has been instrumental in developing the telecommunications infrastructure in Eritrea, although the sector remains one of the least developed in Africa. The company has faced numerous challenges, including limited access to SIM cards and a need for significant investment to improve its infrastructure.

3G Network

Eritel began upgrading its network to third-generation (3G) technology around 2010 as part of a broader network upgrading and expansion project. The rollout of 3G technology was officially reported on June 17, 2014. This initiative was part of Eritel's efforts to modernise its telecommunications infrastructure and improve service delivery. Despite these advancements, as of 2014, Eritrea's mobile and internet penetration rates were notably low, at 6% and 1%, respectively. The introduction of 3G technology was a significant step forward for Eritel, although the network faced congestion issues due to overcrowded connections.
