Golan Telecom is a telecommunications provider and mobile network operator based in Israel. The company was founded in 2010 by Michael Golan, a French businessman who immigrated to Israel in 2007, and his business partner Xavier Niel. Golan Telecom was established as a low-cost mobile phone company, which led to increased competition in the cellular communications market in Israel. In 2011, the company won a tender to operate a 3G wireless network in Israel, commencing operations in 2012.
Golan Telecom was the fifth operator to enter the mobile communications market in Israel, following Pelephone, Cellcom, Partner and Hot Mobile. It was the first brand new company to do so in Israel since 1999. The company's business model emphasises low-cost fixed monthly pricing rather than metered usage, a strategy developed by Golan and Niel during their time at the Iliad SA group in France. Golan Telecom is known for its direct approach to marketing, with its slogan "Enough of being a sucker" reflecting the frustration of Israeli consumers with high cellular communication rates.
