Hondutel, officially known as Empresa Hondureña de Telecomunicaciones, is the government-owned telecommunications company of Honduras. The organisation was established on May 7, 1976, as an autonomous entity with the primary responsibility of modernising the telecommunications system in Honduras and enhancing its administration and profitability. Historically, Hondutel was managed by the Honduran armed forces, as telecommunications were regarded as a matter of national security in the country. In the late 20th century, attempts were made to privatise Hondutel under the pressure of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and as part of a national strategy to attract foreign investment, increase transparency, and boost innovation. However, these efforts were largely unsuccessful due to the company's high-risk investment status and other national priorities. Despite these challenges, Hondutel has continued to operate and expand its services within Honduras, offering mobile phone coverage in several cities and surrounding areas.
