Jawwal, officially known as Palestine Cellular Communications Company, is the first telecommunications company in the Palestinian territories, specialising in cellular and wireless communications. Established in 1999, it was the first to obtain a mobile license in the region, launching services in Gaza and the West Bank in the same year. The company operates under the umbrella of the Paltel Group. Despite facing significant operational challenges, including the seizure of its equipment by Israeli authorities, Jawwal has demonstrated resilience and innovation. In 2005, it adopted communication switchboards in London to serve its subscribers, marking it as the first cellular communication company in the world to operate in this manner.
3G Network
The company operates 2G GSM services over 900 MHz, providing EDGE/GPRS data, and claiming 98% coverage of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Interim peace accords stipulate that Israel has final say regarding spectrum assignments, with an agreement reached in November 2015 regarding the provision of 10 MHz paired spectrum in the 2100 MHz band for Palestinian 3G services. Jawwal is reported to have activated 3G UMTS over the B1 (2100 MHz) band in mid-January 2018.
