Movistar Peru is a telecommunications company operating within Peru. The company is a subsidiary of the Spanish telecommunications giant, Telefónica. The brand was established in 1995 in Spain with the launch of GSM services and became globally recognised on April 5, 2005, following Telefónica's acquisition of the BellSouth mobile operations branch in South America. Despite Telefónica's purchase of O2 in 2005, the Movistar brand has been maintained independently, with its own board and management structure. As such, Movistar Peru operates within the broader Movistar brand but retains operational autonomy within the Peruvian market.
