Movistar Uruguay is a telecommunications company operating in Uruguay. It is a part of the larger Movistar brand, owned by Telefónica, a Spanish multinational telecommunications company. The Movistar brand was first launched in Spain in 1995 with the introduction of GSM services. The brand became globally recognised on 5 April 2005, when Telefónica acquired the BellSouth mobile operations in South America. Despite the acquisition of O2 in 2005 by Telefónica, the company decided to retain the O2 brand in the United Kingdom and Germany, operating it as a separate branch with its own board and management structure. Since 2011, Telefónica has also sponsored a UCI ProTeam in cycling under the name of Movistar Team.
