The Myanma Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) is the sole provider of telecommunication services in Myanmar, established in 1884. It has grown to become a major player in the country's telecommunications sector, employing approximately 13,800 individuals. MPT offers a variety of services, including postal, telegraph, and telephone services for both domestic and international communications. Over the years, MPT has been instrumental in developing Myanmar's telecommunication infrastructure through various projects aimed at installing new exchanges, expanding trunk dialing services, and upgrading technology.
3G Network
MPT launched its 3G services in Myanmar around 2014, utilising the UMTS band B1 (2100 MHz). This deployment marked a significant step in modernsing Myanmar's telecommunications infrastructure, allowing for improved mobile internet services and enhanced connectivity. The introduction of 3G technology facilitated a range of mobile services, including video calling and faster internet browsing, which were previously unavailable in the country.

4G Network
MPT began its journey into 4G technology with a soft launch in Yangon and Naypyidaw in November 2016. Initially, the 4G network employed frequencies in the 2100 MHz band, with plans to expand coverage using the 1800 MHz band following government spectrum auctions. By May 2017, MPT had commercially launched its 4G service in the three major cities of Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, and Mandalay, shortly after acquiring additional spectrum from the government. The operator utilized 4×4 multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) technology in its LTE-Advanced network to deliver peak download speeds of 150 Mbps. By the end of July 2017, MPT extended its 4G network to five additional cities and aimed to cover more than 20 cities by November, ultimately reaching the country's 30 main cities. In 2024, MPT continued to enhance its high-speed LTE network, expanding coverage to 76 townships across various regions, including Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, Ayeyarwaddy Region, Tanintharyi Region, Shan State (East), and Shan State (South). This expansion aimed to provide faster internet connections and improved network quality to customers nationwide.

5G Network
In June 2024, MPT announced the availability of 5G trials in select locations, marking a significant advancement in Myanmar's telecommunications landscape. The introduction of 5G technology promised unprecedented speeds and transformative benefits for both consumers and industries. MPT had been actively expanding its high-speed LTE network and was excited to bring 5G trials to fruition. According to the GSMA website, as of January 2024, 261 operators in 101 countries had launched commercial 5G services, with MPT being one of the 5G service providers in Myanmar. The pilot 5G network aimed to deliver fast download speeds, minimal latency, and enhanced user experiences, particularly for activities such as live streaming and gaming.
