MTN Benin is a subsidiary of MTN Group Limited, a South African multinational corporation and mobile telecommunications provider. The parent company, MTN Group, was founded in 1994 as M-Cell with the support of the South African government. Over the years, the company grew its footprint across Africa and beyond, now operating in over 20 countries. 3G Network

The company has traditionally operated a 2G GSM network over 900 and 1800 MHz, however in September 2011 the government of Benin held a universal licence tender, with MTN being granted a licence. MTN Benin launched their 3G network over the B1 (2100 MHz) and B8 (900 MHz) bands in November 2012.
