3G Network

Nepal Telecom launched its 3G network on May 17, 2007, utilizing the 2100 MHz frequency band. This marked a significant advancement in the country's telecommunications capabilities, providing enhanced mobile internet services. The 3G network initially covered major urban areas, including Kathmandu, and gradually expanded to other regions. By 2017, the network had approximately 60 operational 3G sites, including 59 in Kathmandu and one in Pokhara. Despite the expansion of 4G services, the 3G network remained operational to cater to areas with limited 4G coverage. However, as of 2021, there was a noticeable shift of customers from 3G to 4G due to the latter's superior ecosystem and device compatibility.

    4G Network

Nepal Telecom was the first provider to launch 4G services in Nepal on January 1, 2017, using the 1800 MHz band. Initially, the service was available only in the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara, and it was limited to prepaid users. The launch of 4G services marked a significant milestone in the country's mobile network development, offering faster internet speeds and improved connectivity. By 2019, Nepal Telecom had expanded its 4G network coverage to various parts of the country, signing up 40,000 LTE users within two weeks of the initial launch. The 4G network continued to grow, with coverage reaching more remote areas and enhancing the overall mobile broadband experience for users.

      5G Network

Nepal Telecom has not yet launched a commercial 5G network, but significant steps have been taken towards its deployment. The company received a spectrum allotment and trial permission from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority on November 22, 2021, with the 2600 MHz frequency band allocated for testing. Initial plans to begin 5G trials in mid-July 2021 were delayed due to changes in government and logistical challenges. Despite these setbacks, Nepal Telecom formed a task force in December 2021 to prepare for the 5G trials. The company planned to conduct trials in one location in each of the seven provinces, with the aim of launching test networks by mid-July 2023. However, further delays occurred, and as of early 2024, the trials had not yet been made public. Nepal Telecom intends to conduct a comprehensive cost analysis and issue a global tender for 5G equipment following the completion of the trials.
