Tele2 Netherlands, originally known as Versatel Telecom International N.V, was introduced as a brand in the telecommunications industry in 1997. It was launched to offer telecom services, including mobile telephony, broadband internet, and digital TV products, to both domestic and business customers in the Dutch market. In 2005, the Dutch segment of Versatel was sold to Tele2 for 1.1 billion euro, and subsequently, the name Versatel was replaced by Tele2 in 2006.

In a significant development in the company's ownership, T-Mobile Netherlands expressed its intention to acquire Tele2 Netherlands from its Swedish parent company, Tele2 AB, in December 2017. The merger, delayed due to a European Commission investigation, was finalised in January 2019. As part of the acquisition, Tele2 AB secured a 25% share in T-Mobile Netherlands. Consequently, on 7 January 2020, the legal entity Tele2 Netherlands Holding B.V. was merged into T-Mobile Netherlands, with Tele2 continuing as a brand name of T-Mobile.
