Zambia Telecommunications Company Limited, commonly known as Zamtel, is a government-owned telecommunications service provider operating in Zambia. The company's roots trace back to the first telephone exchange installed in Livingstone as part of the General Post Office (GPO) in 1975. The GPO later transformed into the Zambian Post and Telecommunication Corporation (PTC), which was eventually split into two separate entities: the Zambia Postal Services Corporation (Zampost), and Zamtel. This division was a result of the Telecommunications Act passed by the Zambian government in July 1994.
In 2010, under the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) President, Rupiah Banda, the Zambian government sold 75% of Zamtel to the Libyan company LAP Green Networks. Following the 2011 Zambian national election, the new government under President Michael Sata initiated an inquiry into the sale of Zamtel and found irregularities. This led to the reversal of the sale, and the Zambian government seized control of Zamtel. Currently, the sole shareholder of Zamtel is the Government of the Republic of Zambia, and the company falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications.
