The Cat5e Ethernet Category, also known as Category 5 Enhanced, was introduced in 2001. This category offers a higher performance level than earlier standards, supporting up to 1000 Mbps "Gigabit" speeds at up to 100 metres of cable length. Cat5e is designed to reduce crosstalk, which is the interference that results when signals get mixed up. This made it more reliable for delivering data and lead it to become a popular choice for both residential and commercial network installations. With the introduction of newer standards, Cat5e remains in use although generally limited to residential installations where data speeds are unlikely to exceed the 1 Gbps mark.
