Bluetooth Class 1 represents the highest power level of Bluetooth devices, with a maximum power output of 100 mW (20 dBm). This class of Bluetooth devices has the longest operational range, typically up to 100 metres. However, this range can be theoretically extended up to 1 kilometre with a clear line of sight and optimal conditions. Due to the higher power output, Class 1 devices consume more energy than Class 2 or Class 3 devices, making them less energy efficient. They are commonly used in industrial and commercial applications where a long range is required. Class 1 devices are fully backwards compatible with Class 2 and Class 3 devices. However, when communicating with these lower power devices, the operational range will be limited by the lower power device's range. It's important to note that while Class 1 devices can provide a longer range, they do not necessarily provide a higher data transfer rate. The data transfer rate of Bluetooth devices is determined by the Bluetooth version rather than the power class. In terms of safety, Class 1 devices are still safe to use. Even though they have a higher power output, they still fall well within international safety limits for radio frequency exposure.
