n79 (4700 MHz)

Designated as the "TD 4700" band, the n79 band operates across the 4400 to 5000 MHz frequency range for 5G NR5G NR: 5G was developed with three broad use case families in mind: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type communications (mMTC) and ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). eMBB focuses on across-the-board enhancements to the data rate, latency, user density, capacity and… networks. Like other Time Division Duplexing (TDDTDD: A wireless communication technique that uses a single frequency band for both transmitting and receiving operations but separates these operations in time. In a TDD system, upstream (transmission from user equipment to base station) and downstream (transmission from base station to user equipment)…) bands, it allocates the same frequency for both uplink and downlink, separating them by timing. Its high-frequency range offers high capacity for data-intensive services.

Late 2017 China announced their intention to use the 4.8 to 5 GHz for 5G services, along with studying 4.4 to 4.5 GHz band for future 5G applications. The 4.4 to 4.8 GHz band is also of strong interest to Japan, consequently 3GPP standardised n79 (4500 MHz) to harmonise requirements of China and Japan.

In April 2019 Japan completed its auction of the 4.5 GHz band, locking in the n79 band for national 5G deployments.
