Designated as the "TD 4700" band, the n79 band operates across the 4400 to 5000 MHz frequency range for 5G NR networks. Like other Time Division Duplexing (TDD) bands, it allocates the same frequency for both uplink and downlink, separating them by timing. Its high-frequency range offers high capacity for data-intensive services.
Late 2017 China announced their intention to use the 4.8 to 5 GHz for 5G services, along with studying 4.4 to 4.5 GHz band for future 5G applications. The 4.4 to 4.8 GHz band is also of strong interest to Japan, consequently 3GPP standardised n79 (4500 MHz) to harmonise requirements of China and Japan.
In April 2019 Japan completed its auction of the 4.5 GHz band, locking in the n79 band for national 5G deployments.
