Airtel Kenya is a telecommunications company operating in Kenya. It is a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel Limited, an Indian multinational telecommunications services company based in New Delhi. The parent company, Bharti Airtel, was founded by Sunil Mittal in 1984 and has since grown to operate in 18 countries across South Asia and Africa.
Airtel Kenya's parent company, Bharti Airtel, was initially established as Bharti Telecom Limited (BTL) in 1984. By the early 1990s, BTL transitioned into the mobile telecom business, launching services in Delhi in 1995 under the brand name AirTel. The company went public in 2002 and re-branded its cellular phone operations under the single Airtel brand in 2003. In 2010, Bharti Airtel completed its $10.7 billion acquisition of the African business of Zain Telecom, marking the largest ever acquisition by an Indian telecom firm and expanding Airtel's operations into Africa, including Kenya.
