EE, previously known as Everything Everywhere, is a British mobile network operator and internet service provider operating under the BT Group. The company was established in 2010 as a joint venture between Deutsche Telekom and France Télécom (now Orange S.A.) and was rebranded as EE in 2012, coinciding with the launch of the UK's first 4G mobile network. EE became a part of BT's consumer division in April 2018, following its acquisition by BT in January 2016. The company operates under three brands: BT, EE, and Plusnet. Its headquarters were initially in Hatfield, England, but now its main offices are in London, with additional locations in Bristol, Darlington, Sunderland, Greenock, Merthyr Tydfil, North Tyneside, Plymouth and Leeds.
Deutsche Telekom and France Télécom announced plans to merge their UK ventures, T-Mobile UK and Orange UK, in 2009. The merger was cleared by the European Commission in March 2010, and T-Mobile (UK) Limited was renamed to Everything Everywhere Limited in July. The joint venture was completed on 1 April 2010, and the name Everything Everywhere was announced on 11 May 2010. In 2012, the company rebranded to EE and introduced a third brand as part of a future 4G launch to sit alongside Orange and T-Mobile. In 2014, Orange S.A. and Deutsche Telekom considered selling EE or divesting it through an initial public offering. BT Group confirmed in February 2015 that it would be acquiring EE for £12.5 billion, a deal that received final unconditional approval by the Competition and Markets Authority in January 2016. The deal was completed on 29 January 2016, resulting in Deutsche Telekom owning 12% of BT, while Orange owns 4%.
