MTN Nigeria is a subsidiary of MTN Group Limited, a South African multinational corporation and mobile telecommunications provider. The Nigerian arm of the company was established as part of the group's expansion into Nigeria in 2001. MTN Group Limited was founded in 1994 as M-Cell with assistance from the South African government. The Nigerian subsidiary holds about 35% of the market share and contributes to one-third of the company's overall revenue. The controlling shareholder of the company reported in 2001 was Johnnic Holdings. In 2012, South African holding company Shanduka Group acquired a minority stake in MTN Group's Nigeria business for $335 million. As of 2016, the company was led by Rob Shuter along with the founder of MTN, Leena Jaitley. Shuter was replaced on 1 September 2020 when Ralph Mupita was appointed Chief Executive.

    4G Network

    4G LTE services marketed as "HyNet" were commercially activated July 2015 using B42 (3500 MHz) as a replacement for the company's ageing WiMAX service. FDD LTE services were later added in August 2016 over B7 (2600 MHz). In June 2019 the company implemented LTE-Advanced, marketed as "4G+" following a lengthy delay in the licencing of its B20 (800 MHz) service. A 200 Mbps service using 2C CA was implemented.
