Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is a state-owned telecommunications service provider in India. The company was incorporated on 28 February 1986 by the Government of India as a wholly owned subsidiary under the Department of Telecommunications. MTNL operates in the metro cities of Mumbai and New Delhi, and in the island nation of Mauritius in Africa. Despite being a public sector company, 56.25% of its shares are owned by the public and institutional investors. The remaining 43.75% is owned by the President of India, acting through the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
