Niger Telecoms, the national telephone and telecommunications carrier of Niger, was established on September 28, 2016. It was formed through the merger of two previously distinct entities: SONITEL, which managed fixed telephony, and SahelCom, which controlled mobile telephony and connections. This merger was a strategic move by the Nigerien government to consolidate the telecommunications sector following financial difficulties faced by both companies after their privatisation in 2001. The government renationalised the companies in 2012, leading to the formation of Niger Telecoms with an initial capital of 23.5 billion CFA francs.
