3G Network

NOS, under its former identity as Optimus, launched its 3G services in Portugal in April 2006. The network utilised the UMTS frequency band B1 (2100 MHz), which was deployed across the country to provide enhanced mobile data services. By 2009, NOS had introduced HSPA+ technology, offering speeds up to 21 Mbps in major cities like Lisbon and Porto. This upgrade significantly improved mobile broadband services, catering to the increasing demand for high-speed internet access. However, with the advent of more advanced technologies like 4G and 5G, the 3G network's relevance diminished over time. As of 2024, the 3G network has been largely phased out in favor of more efficient and faster technologies.

    4G Network

NOS launched its 4G LTE network on March 15, 2012, initially using the LTE1800 and 2.6 GHz frequency bands in densely populated areas, while 800 MHz was utilised in rural regions. This deployment marked a significant leap in mobile connectivity, offering faster data speeds and improved network reliability. In November 2015, NOS introduced LTE-Advanced technology, capable of delivering speeds up to 300 Mbps by aggregating band 3 and band 7 spectrums. Additionally, a commercial service providing 225 Mbps was available using combinations of band 20 with either band 3 or band 7. NOS also embarked on deploying a nationwide Cat-NB1 network to support the growing IoT ecosystem. By 2024, NOS had expanded its 4G network to cover a substantial portion of Portugal, ensuring robust and reliable mobile broadband services.

      5G Network

NOS was at the forefront of 5G development in Portugal, being the first to launch commercial 5G services in December 2021. The company utilised the 5G NR frequency band n78, operating at 3500 MHz, known for its high capacity and widespread use in 5G deployments globally. The 5G network was designed to provide high-speed data services, enhancing NOS's mobile network capabilities. In 2023, NOS launched its 5G Standalone network, further solidifying its position as a leader in advanced telecommunications. The deployment included the n28 frequency band and was part of NOS's efforts to offer cutting-edge connectivity solutions. By 2024, NOS had expanded its 5G network significantly, contributing to Portugal's rapid growth and high penetration of advanced mobile technologies.
