NTT DOCOMO, Inc., a prominent mobile phone operator in Japan, was established in August 1991. The company was originally a spin-off from its parent entity, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), to oversee its mobile cellular operations. The term "DOCOMO" is an abbreviation of "do communications over the mobile network", and it also signifies "everywhere" in Japanese. The company's headquarters are located in the Sanno Park Tower, Nagatachō, Chiyoda, Tokyo. The majority stake in DOCOMO was held by NTT until 2020, when the company underwent re-privatisation. However, by the end of 2020, NTT had reacquired DOCOMO for approximately $40 billion. Today, DOCOMO is recognised as the largest wireless carrier in Japan, providing a range of services including phone, video phone, internet, and mail services.

      DOCOMO is a world-leading developer of 5G networks, which it plans to deploy in the 2020s by leveraging network function virtualization (NFV) and other technologies. DOCOMO is also driving innovation in NFC infrastructure and services, emerging IoT solutions and many other mobile-related initiatives.

      DOCOMO launched 5G mmWave services in September 2020, later adding Sub-6 GHz n77 and n79 in 2C carrier aggregation in December 2020. The network was transitioned to Standalone (SA) mode in December 2021.
