Tele2 Sweden is a prominent telecommunications company based in Stockholm, Sweden. It was established in 1993 by the Investment AB Kinnevik company. Originally, Tele2 started as Comvik, an alternative mobile phone operator to the state-owned company Televerket. In 1986, it expanded its services to include cable television through Kabelvision AB. By 1991, it had become Sweden's first commercial Internet service provider, Swipnet, which later rebranded as Tele2. The brand consolidated its services under the Tele2 brand for fixed-line services and Comviq for mobile services in 1997.
Tele2 Sweden underwent a significant change in 2018 when it merged with telecom operator Com Hem, which provided TV, broadband, and telephony services. This merger expanded Tele2's services to include streaming, with the launch of the Comhem Play+ streaming service in 2020, which was later rebranded as Tele2 Play in 2022. The company remains a major player in the Swedish telecommunications market, providing a range of services to both consumers and enterprises.
