Telma has its origins as the incumbent state-owned telecommunications service provider, dating back to 1896. Following privatisation in 2001 the company launched Telma Mobile in 2006. After changing hands several times the company is today owned by Axian Group, a a family-owned Malagasy company, with operations in several countries around the Indian Ocean.
