Tigo is the largest mobile carrier operating in El Salvador. The company was founded in 1992 as Telemovil S.A., becoming Tigo in 2003 following the rebranding strategy initiated by its parent, Millicom International Cellular S.A. Today Tigo remains a fully owned subsidiary of Millicom, a NASDAQ listed mobile operator specialising in emerging markets.

Tigo has provided 2G GSM services over the 850 MHz band since September 2004. The company launched its 3G network over B5 (850 MHz) in September 2008, and upgraded to HSPA+ in January 2012 supporting data rates up to 21 Mbps.

4G Network
4G LTE was activated in December 2016 over the B4 (1700 MHz) band. The network was upgraded to LTE-Advanced in 2020 with the addition of a second B4 carrier.
