Vodacom Tanzania Limited, a leading cellular network company in Tanzania, was established in December 1999 as a subsidiary of the Vodacom Group based in South Africa. The company was licensed to operate a GSM cellular network in Tanzania, marking it as the third licensed network operator in the country. Its rapid growth led it to become the largest mobile communications network operator in Tanzania within a year of its launch.
The initial ownership structure of Vodacom Tanzania was a joint venture, with the Vodacom Group holding approximately 65 percent and the remaining 35 percent owned by Tanzanian shareholders, including Mirambo Holdings. Over time, the ownership structure evolved, with local partners Planetel Communications and Caspian Construction holding significant stakes. The company went live on 14 August 2000 and officially announced its commercial operations the following day.

5G Network
Vodacom launched its 5G network in September 2022 using a combination of n28 (700 MHz) and n40 (2300 MHz) bands. As its 700 MHz spectrum is also in use for 4G it is expected this is a DSS band.
