The company was founded in 2018 as a result of a merger between two major entities, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, both of which had a substantial presence in the Indian telecom market. The ownership of Vi is shared between the UK-based Vodafone Group and India's Aditya Birla Group, with the latter holding the majority stake.
