Senegal, located in western Africa, is a coastal nation with a population of approximately 17 million. The population is primarily concentrated in the west, notably in Dakar, the capital. The east of the country, in contrast, remains largely rural and underdeveloped. Senegal's telecommunications sector is one of the most advanced in Africa, with a mature mobile market having near universal coverage. Despite this, the internet sector is still developing, characterised by low penetration rates, though the recent arrival of international submarine fibre optic cables is improving access and cutting costs. Senegal is also making strides in renewable energy, particularly in solar power, with the country's abundant sunshine providing an ideal environment for solar installations, however oil still dominates the country's energy mix.
