British Telecom, commonly referred to as BT, is a multinational telecommunications company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The company was established in 1981 following the split of the Post Office's telecommunications operations into a separate entity. BT operates as a public limited company and is listed on the London and New York stock exchanges. The UK government initially held a significant stake in BT, but gradually sold off its shares in a series of offerings, with the final sale occurring in 1993. Today, BT is owned by a diverse range of institutional and individual shareholders, with no single entity holding a controlling stake.
